When to Seek Immediate Eye Care
You should seek urgent care right away if you notice any of these warning signs:
- Severe or throbbing eye pain
- Swelling around your eye or eyelids
- A sudden loss of sight
- Sudden flashes of light or a new shower of floating spots
- Something stuck inside your eye
- A scratch on the surface of your eye
- Heavy discharge, pus, or deep redness

Simple First Aid for Eye Emergencies
An eye injury or sudden issue can happen with little to no warning. While you prepare to see a professional, knowing a few simple steps can help protect your eyes.
If you or a family member run into an urgent eye situation, try to stay calm, use these first-aid tips, and seek medical care as soon as possible.
Chemical splashes can happen while cleaning at home, working on projects, or gardening. If a chemical gets in your eye:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap.
- Turn your head so the affected eye is facing down and to the side.
- Gently hold your eyelid open and flush the eye with clean, lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes.
- Call East Riverside Optometry immediately or head to the nearest emergency department.
Small bits like dust, eyelashes, or sand in the eye can cause discomfort. To remove them, try to:
- Avoid rubbing your eye, as this can cause a scratch.
- Blink several times to help your natural tears wash it out.
- Gently rinse your eye with artificial tears or cool water.
- Seek care if the object does not come out or irritation continues.
For larger objects like glass or metal, do not try to remove them yourself. Seek emergency medical care immediately.
